Nikon Sucks. Just a little bit.
Updated March 17, 2008: Since I posted this, I’ve installed the ‘new’ Picture Project 1.7.5 and the associated camera transfer program, but the transfer just quits every time I connect my camera, so I’m just going to use iPhoto for importing and everything else.

My Nikon Picture Project software does not run on an Intel Mac. It starts up and then immediately quits. It’s not the end of the world, I can use other programs that came with the Mac to transfer pictures to my computer. But there’s a wireless transfer option that would be nice to use in the Picture Project program.
Using the handy Nikon update program, I am informed that there are NO new updates for my software, even though I have seen on the Nikon website that there is one available and that they suggest using the Nikon update program to download the software. Otherwise you have to join the Nikon forum and find your camera serial number. Very annoying. So I am now a member of the Nikon forum, or whatever it’s called. I have downloaded this ‘new’ software, which promises to do the following:
PictureProject Version 1.7.5
What’s New?/ Issues Addressed with version 1.7.5
–Compatibility with Intel-based Macintosh computers was added (under Rosetta).
That sounds like what I’m looking for, software that works as opposed to not working.
The Read Me file contains the following tidbits, that you can read after unpacking the .sit file. I have generously added bold to comments I find interesting:
Thank you for investing in a Nikon digital camera. Please read the following last minute important information.
1. PictureProject Transfer
a) In the “PictureProject Transfer” dialog, please do not activate the checkbox “Delete original files after transfer” when you connect the camera with an SD memory card that is write protected (via the tiny write protect switch located on the SD card) to your computer while the USB transfer protocol of your camera is set to “PTP”. If the Delete checkbox is active, images may fail to transfer. When in PTP mode, the camera does not mount as if it was a removable hard disk drive.
b) If you are using a Macintosh equipped with an Intel microprocessor, you cannot wirelessly transfer images from a wireless compatible camera. Please transfer images via a USB connection.
c) If you are using a Macintosh equipped with an Intel microprocessor, you cannot transfer images by connecting a D1 series camera to your PC. Please use devices such as card reader to transfer images.
2. Burn Disk
a) The number shown for the number of blank CD-R disks required when you select “Burn as” for [Optimized JPEG Photos] field may not always match the number of disks actually required.
b) The “Speed” field may not display the actual writing speed for the Burn Disk feature. Also, the actual writing speed may vary from the writing speed you have selected in the “Speed” field.
c) The format used for CD Burning is ISO 9660 Joliet. However this format does not support file information that is Mac OS specific, and may cause Mac users to lose information such as file icons.
d) When you burn a CD/DVD by enabling “Include QuickTime Slideshow Movie” checkbox, the size of QuickTime Slideshow is always set to 640×480 even if you select other than “640×480″ from the “Size” menu.
e) An error message will be shown when some data is added to the CD originally burned with software other than PictureProject. Please do not write additional data to a CD originally burned with PictureProject using other software, since the data on the disc may become unreadable.
f) If you create a disc with the “Optimized JPEG Photos” under the “Burn as:” option and the “Include QuickTime Slideshow Movie” checkbox selected, the QuickTime Movie Slideshow file on the disc will not be displayed in PictureProject. Since the slideshow is written on the disc, you will need to open it from the Finder.
g) If you create a disc in the Edit or Design mode, the disc does not reflect the original collection list structure on PictureProject. New collections will be created for the disc.
h) If you need multiple discs to write the data to, all the discs have to be of the same type and blank.
i) You may have trouble creating a disc when the “Erase disc before burning” checkbox is selected. In that case, please erase your disc using some programs such as Disk Utility and then clear the checkox. before you create a disc.
j) If you are using a Macintosh equipped with an Intel microprocessor, you need to close PictureProject after creating each disc when the “Optimized JPEG Photos” checkbox is selected. You may have trouble creating discs unless you close PictureProject each time you create a disc.3. Slide Show
During QuickTime Slideshow, clicking in any part of PictureProject window before the first slide is displayed may cause PictureProject to shutdown improperly.4. Collection icon:
a). The Icon of the collection shows the thumbnail of a picture in the collection. However, the icon will not reflect changes made in the collection, such as removing, rotating or changing the sort order of pictures.5. Photoshop NEF Plug-in
a) A RAW NEF file that is cropped (with Nikon Capture Editor) to less than 64 pixels in width cannot be opened using the Photoshop NEF Plug-in. Re-open the image using Nikon Capture and make it larger to use the Photoshop Plug-in.
b) The Nikon NEF plug-in for Photoshop will display a “RAW adjustments” dialog box when it opens RAW NEF files. However, once images are edited and saved by Nikon Capture, the “RAW adjustment” dialog box will be skipped and the previous settings saved by Nikon Capture will be used.
c) When opening a raw image file that is taken by a D1 camera, the “Sharpening” setting is always set to “None” even when custom setting #23 (Sharpening) is set to “Normal” (Default), “High” or “Low”. When using the D1X/D1H, it always follows the custom setting you have selected.6. Digital DEE on Nikon Capture 4
Images having Digital DEE applied on using Nikon Capture 4 may have some problems with Digital DEE on PictureProject.7. Photoshop file information
If you edit an image file with PictureProject, which has file information, such as a caption or keywords added using Adobe Photoshop’s File Information menu, the entered information may become corrupted an unreadable in Photoshop.8. Edited images
When the Extras command under the View menu is selected, edited images are marked with icons indicating the images are edited. However, the icons may not display properly for JPEG and TIFF formatted images edited with PictureProject prior to version 1.6. If this happens, select the Refresh command under the View menu so that icons are displayed properly.9. File Size
Selecting the Revert to Original command under the Photo menu may not restore edited TIFF images to their original sizes if the file was saved using compression.10. Redeye Reduction
a) The redeye reduction function has been improved for PictureProject version 1.6. Images edited with previous versions of PictureProject may show different redeye reduction results when viewed with PictureProject 1.6.
b) Red Eye Reduction does not work for D1X NEF format images.11. Using PictureProject with TiVo(r)
In order to publish photos from PictureProject to be viewed with your TiVo(r) DVR, you need to install the TiVo Desktop Macintosh version 1.9 or later. This software will be available free to download from www.tivo.com/desktop starting February 2005. Nikon does not provide any direct support of the TiVo Desktop software. Please visit the TiVo web site for information about their products and customer support.12. File Versions
